Energy-Efficient Ways to Stay Warm at Home

When the first “below zero-like” day rolls into town, your first instinct is to adjust your thermostat and heat every square inch of your home. However, when more days arrive bearing a similar temperature, it’s possible your heater won’t have a day to “relax and unwind” — and you’ll probably see a gradual increase in your monthly energy bills, too.

To help stay cozy, while cutting your energy consumption in half, here are some ways to keep warm for less this winter.

Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat

If you’re looking to keep a close eye on your heating usage during the winter months (and beyond), consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat in your home. Unlike a traditional device, this thermostat can be controlled remotely (by a smartphone) and will allow you to create a completely customized heating schedule that can help save money in the long run!

Open the Blinds During the Day

While this might seem self-explanatory, opening the blinds during the day is a great way to heat your home for less. For instance, in rooms directly facing the sun or taking a brunt of the rays, open the curtains all the way — or raise the blinds — to let the sunshine pool into the space.

Doing this will help heat the room naturally, but be careful not to leave them open while you’ve stepped away — as this could pose a danger to your home (i.e., intruders).

Bundle Up Indoors

Sure, it might seem outlandish, but it’s a great way to rely less on your heater and still reap the benefit of being warm. From wearing a wool hat to a light jacket, these are things that cannot only keep you warm outdoors but can help keep you warm indoors.

As an added layer of warmth, consider drinking warm beverages — such as coffee or tea — to help keep toasty. Within a few minutes, you’ll feel the difference and will consider adjusting your thermostat as a last resort.
