How Can I Tell if I Have a Problem With My Drain?

Something that tends to creep up on most homeowners (when they least expect it) is a problem with their drain. Whether it be the sink or the bathtub, no drain is off-limits from sustaining an issue. If you think that your drain requires repair, here are some signs to be on the lookout for.

Signs of a Drain-Related Issue

Water Isn’t Leaving the Plumbing Fixture

Let’s cut to the chase — one of the most common signs of having a drain-related issue is that water doesn’t seem to leave the sink or tub. Even if it’s draining at a slower-than-usual pace, this could indicate that there’s an obstruction within the drain.

More often than not, a blockage can be formed by:

  • Hair

  • Soap scum

  • Grease/oil

  • Food particles

Regardless of what caused the obstruction in the first place, you’ll want to make sure that you contact a plumber right away to restore your plumbing fixture to working order (and to help eliminate a larger plumbing problem from occurring down the road).

Foul Smells Arise from the Drain

Another indication that you have a problem with your plumbing drain is if foul odors are coming out from within it. As it turns out, this can indicate that something is lingering in the drain that’s causing the initial problem.

While the usual suspects for a drain blockage are listed above, a way to eliminate the obstruction (and smell) is to opt for a professional drain cleaning at least once a year. Doing so will help clean the drainpipe walls, eliminating that foul smell and “roadblock” once and for all.
