Ways to Make Your Central AC Run Much More Efficiently

Your central air conditioning unit is a household staple, and it can make days (and nights) unbearable in the summer if it isn't working. Although some repairs require a professional, you can extend the life of your central AC and improve its efficiency with a few simple practices.

Don’t Forget Your Spring Tune-Up

Calling in your trusted Milford HVAC technicians to tune up your system is a must. After a long winter, switching from heating to air conditioning can cause problems with your system, leading to increased energy consumption and higher costs.

A spring tune-up includes preventative maintenance, cleaning, and adjustments that will keep your AC running smoothly for the next six months.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Your air filter should be replaced at least once every ninety days to ensure optimal performance. Now, if you have a washable air filter in place, you can clean it at home in five easy steps.

  1. Shut off the unit completely.

  2. Remove the filter and vacuum it to remove loose dust and dirt.

  3. Use 2-cups water, 2-cups vinegar to soak your filter in the sink for one hour; you can also use the garden hose if it's too big to fit in your sink. Just avoid the pressurized setting.

  4. Air-dry the filter for at least 30 minutes. Do not place a wet or damp filter in your unit.

  5. Reinstall the filter and enjoy the fresh air!

Clean the Outside Condenser

Your AC condenser releases heat, so your house stays cool when it's hot outside. Clean yours by removing any leaves, sticks, and debris around the outside central unit. Then, vacuum any dirt and dust around the bottom of the unit. If you aren't sure how to clean the condenser yourself inside, we can always help.

Clean Your Vents

If you notice any dirt or dust collecting on vents on the ceiling, that's a sign you need to vacuum them ASAP. Please do not enter the vents or insert anything in them; cleaning them from the surface is enough.

If you suspect the vents need a more thorough cleaning, you can always opt for a professional duct cleaning service.
