The refrigerator is one of the most important appliances in your home. It houses all of your perishable food and needs to run in tip-top shape for it to be efficient. If you want want your refrigerator to work properly and efficiently, there are a few things you should know.

The Perfect Temperature
The desired temperature of your refrigerator should be between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature ever rises above 40 degrees, the food inside of it may be prone to developing bacteria and being deemed unsafe to consume. To check your refrigerator’s temperature, keep a refrigerator thermometer in the refrigerator door (the warmest area).

Proper Organization
All foods close to expiration should be placed towards the front for easy access. Foods should also be placed in specific areas based on the temperature in which they need to be cooked. Any food that doesn’t need to be cooked should be placed on the top shelf, and high-temperature food like meats should be placed on the bottom shelf since this is the coldest part of the refrigerator. The door’s shelving is the warmest area of the refrigerator and should only be used for storing condiments.

Smooth Operation
Since the refrigerator is running 24/7 without a break, it should be well-maintained. Check the door gaskets to make sure there is a proper seal. A weak seal can cause the appliance to overwork itself in an attempt to stay at the desired temperature. The refrigerator should also be pulled out from the wall occasionally so the back can be inspected and cleaned. Vacuum away any dust and debris that has settled onto the coils and condenser to allow for improved airflow.
